WHAT TO WEAR

Attendees will probably be spending the whole day outside, and it could get pretty cold, so they need to bring lots of layers to work with.

  1. Base layer: “Long johns”, thermal underwear, etc. Synthetics are best (polypropylene, polyester, etc.). Wool is also good. Silk is okay, but it does not wick moisture away from your body. Do not wear cotton, unless it’s all you can find. A lightweight layer is best if you ski hard, midweight for intermediates, and heavyweight for beginners (you’ll be warmer).
  2. Second layer: Lightweight pants, turtlenecks, etc. Synthetics, polyester fleece, or wool are best. Cotton is okay.
  3. Third layer: Vests or sweaters. Goose down, polyester fleece, wool, or cotton.
  4. Outer layer: Waterproof/windproof shell or insulated outer garment. Ski or snowboard pants and jackets with zippered pockets. Jacket or parka should have a hood. Pants should have a snow cuff (gator) that goes over the boot top. Bib-type pants (overalls) keep snow from going down your back. Some have suspenders, which, though dorky looking, work well.
  5. Footwear: When not wearing ski or snowboard boots, high-top, waterproof, insulated boots with a good tread are best.
  6. Socks: Calf length. Non-cotton. Polypropylene, wool, or synthetic blend. Thinner socks are better in ski or snowboard boots, as they are pretty well insulated these days.
  7. Hands: Ski mittens or ski gloves (mittens are warmer). Waterproof (Goretex, etc.) is better, but most others are fine. Rubberized or leather gripping surface on palm is good, as are extended cuffs. Some have a pocket for heat packs.
  8. Heat Packs: Inexpensive, disposable chemical heat packs generally last all day (check label). They slip inside boots or mittens. Great for really cold days. Get enough for two days.
  9. Headgear: Helmets, hats or headbands are a must. Make sure your ears are covered. Helmets can be rented at the mountain. We don’t suggest skiing without one.
  10. Eyewear: Sunglasses are okay; goggles are better. Goggles cannot be rented, so pick up a pair ahead of time. Even the cheapest goggles are fine these days, but make sure they are the double-layer lens type (they don’t fog up). Check to see if they fit on a helmet, if you’re planning on using one, because some don’t.

Purchase everything you think you will need before you leave. Waiting until you get to the mountain to buy these items can get very pricey, and the range of options is limited.

Very important! Bring a bathing suit for Après-ski hot tub and pool!
